4-class series focusing exclusively on Rumba Guaguanco, taught by Professor Sarita Leyva of York University's School of Fine Arts in Cuban dance & ENIA graduate from Havana Cuba (one of the top national dance institutions in Cuba). Explore another layer of Salsa with us in this 4-class series! 3 classes of material, and a 4th class polishing, reviewing, and show casing all that we've learned!

Rumba Guaguanco is an Afro-Cuban partner dance that reflects the "chase" dynamic central to Salsa partner dancing...the call and response dynamic that stems from Cuban Son & Rumba. A 1-hour workshop on Rumba is just a small intro to this rich dance, so this 4-class series is for those interested in learning and dancing this beautiful & influential Afro-Cuban partner dance in more detail. Rumba Guaguanco can be danced during Rumba breaks in Salsa music and in sync with Salsa timing, which will be explained in detail in class.

Sarita’s extensive dance history includes being an alumna of:

-ENIA; one of the top National Folkloric dance schools in Cuba
-Domingo Pau; a living encyclopedia of Cuban dances
-Isaias Rojas; director and founder of Compañía BanRará
-Juan Teodoro Florentino; choreographer and musician of Ballet Folklórico Cutumba
-Ernestina Quintana "Nenita"; dancer and founder of Compañía de Danza Contemporánea de Cuba

Each Afrocuban dance complex (Yoruba/Kongo/Arara/Carabali/Rumba) has many dances within them, and they are all difficult enough to learn on their own. This series is focusing exclusively on Rumba Guaguanco of the Rumba complex.

Sarita will teach the steps, intention, rhythm, body movement, partner connection, history, and intention of this specific Afro-Cuban dance. Limited spots available, so book early to reserve your spot!

*15% of proceeds will go straight to over-the-counter medicine to locals in Havana, Cuba.
