8-class series exclusively on the steps, body movement, and 3 rhythms of Elegua; the opener of ways, the messenger, & the trickster. All offerings go through Elegua, so he is a seminal Orisha and his dance is one of the most extensive in the Yoruba pantheon. Join us at Dovercourt house, w/ its wooden sprung floors, as we explore the steps, body movement, and 3 central rhythms of Elegua in detail with Sarita Leyva, professor of Cuban dance from York University's School of Fine Arts & alumna of Cuba's prestigious Arts school; ENA(Escuela Nacional de Arte). Salsa Level 4 (Intermediate), On1 timing.
Thursdays, 7:30pm
An 8-class course (divided into two 4-class series) that explores more advanced variations of foundation moves & introduces 2 new concepts to our Salsa repertoire. Shines (solo steps) are introduced at this level, and the concept of breaking On2 vs On1 timing. We always combine the previous week’s material with the current week, so the more regularly one attends the more they get out of the classes. An assessment by one of our instructors is required before joining. Students need social dancing experience to join this level. REGISTER NOW

An 8-class course (divided into two 4-class series) that explores more complex variations of the foundation moves, reinforces technique and partner connection, introduces 2 new Salsa figures, and explores more intricate shines with some Afro-Cuban elements. We always review the previous week’s material with the current week, so the more regularly you attend the more you get out of it. This intermediate Salsa series explores shines taken from different layers of Salsa (NY Mambo, Rumba, Son) and focuses on more intricate partner work to On2 timing. It emphasizes connection techniques, ladies' & mens' styling, spins & pencil turns, and Afro-Mambo to reflect the eclectic roots of Salsa dancing. Musicality in our shines and partner work are emphasized as well as different Salsa genres (Salsa Dura/Salsa Romantica/Cuban Salsa/Jazzy Salsa) & their relation to Salsa dancing. Our Salsa Foundations course is a bi-monthly Intro to Salsa course that's 4 classes. Students learn the most fundamental Salsa steps & patterns at this level. The aim is to emphasize the same essential material to ensure learners retain the steps, movements, lead/follow techniques, and an understanding of Salsa music in relation to the steps. Bachata Foundations (Level 1). TBA; we're currently in full Salsa mode.
The foundations, no decorations! Our Bachata Foundations class is a 4-class course (bi-monthly) where the fundamental steps, musicality, and partner work of Bachata dancing are taught. The goal is to establish a firm foundation in learning the steps, rhythm, hip movement and technique of this sensual Dominican dance. We cover & review the crucial material to ensure students understand Bachata music (both Traditional & Modern) in relation to the basic steps and their variations, and the techniques required to dance them with a partner. Students can join this level anytime, drop-ins welcome.
Bachata Beginners (Level 2). TBA; we're currently in full Salsa mode.
An 8-class course (divided into two 4-class series) for students that feel comfortable with the material in the Bachata Foundation class and would like to explore Bachata further. In this level we start to combine the foundation moves, introduce some simpler variations & concepts, and introduce the concept of body isolations & body movement in Bachata as you continue your Bachata journey. Also, these classes explore the most common elements & musicality of the different styles of Bachata dancing: Traditional, Modern, & Sensual. Partner connection techniques are always emphasized to reinforce the basic concepts of social dancing. Due to the structure of the classes, students that have completed our foundation course can join this course anytime. Drop ins, who have done an assessment, are welcome!
Bachata Intermediate (Level 3). TBA; we're currently in full Salsa mode.
This course is an ongoing series for students that feel comfortable with the material in the Bachata Foundation class and would like to explore Bachata further. In this level we start to combine the foundation moves, introduce some simpler variations & concepts, and introduce the concept of body isolations & body movement in Bachata as you continue your Bachata journey. Also, these classes explore the most common elements & musicality of the different styles of Bachata dancing: Traditional, Modern, & Sensual. Partner connection techniques are always emphasized to reinforce the basic concepts of social dancing.
